As funny as it may sound, I recently received this comment from one of my callers. As I mentioned in the last note, I work for an internet provider (to remain nameless) doing technical support. Let me tell you how this call went down.

We’ll name this customer Mr. Irrational because that’s exactly what he was.. irrational. So anyway, Mr. Irrational called to set up wireless on his son’s PC. His son goes to college and needs his PC to get his schedule and do his assignments etc. I told Mr. Irrational “I can definitely help you with that” and tried. For whatever reason, after all the troubleshooting, his son’s PC would not even search for wireless networks. It was quite obviously a PC Issue.

“That’s impossible!!” Screamed Mr. Irrational, “it has to be your modem!”

To which I replied “Sir, if it was our modem, you would not have two other computers set up wirelessly.”

This is where Mr. Irrational started yelling about how our provider would have to employ his son because he wouldn’t be able to finish college because of us. He can’t finish college because he doesn’t have internet on that one computer. So this is what I said:

“Sir, listen to me. You have no right to blame us for your son not finishing college. You have 3 other computers with working internet.. let him use one of those. He could also use a friend or roommate’s computer. I went without internet for 2 months when I was in college and made it through okay.”

Mr. Irrational began singing a different tune after this. He had just, nonchalantly, been told off by technical support and all he could say was “ok.. have a nice day!”
